The Tale of the Eastern Suburbs Rugby Union Club

Long ago, in the year 1938 of the common reckoning, there arose in the land of Canberra a band of warriors, clad not in mail and steel, but in jerseys of red, white and blue, with hearts bold and unyielding. They were known as the Eastern Suburbs Rugby Union Club, or simply Easts, and from their home in Griffith, they strode forth to test their strength upon the fields of battle.

The First Age: A House Forged in Strength

In the early days, Easts stood in mighty fellowship with the warriors of RMC Duntroon, whose numbers swelled their ranks and lent them strength in the great contests of the land. Yet, as the ages turned and the tides of fate shifted, the warriors of RMC set forth upon their own path, forging a new realm for themselves. And so, Easts stood alone, but they did not falter. Nay, they steeled themselves for the trials to come.

The Dark Years and the Fire of Resilience

As with all great houses, Easts endured trials that tested the very sinew of their spirit. In the early years of the new millennium, a shadow fell upon their halls. The loss of their fortress in Manuka was a grievous wound, and many feared for the fate of the club. Yet even in the midst of hardship, the warriors of Easts pressed on, their banners unbowed. In the year 2008, they marched to the grand final, where before a mighty host at Viking Park, they waged a battle most fierce against the Queanbeyan Whites. Though they fell that day, their courage burned bright, and their name was sung in the halls of the faithful.

The Second Age: A New Dawn

In the year 2012, a great captain from distant lands, Jake White, once of the Springboks, sought to strengthen the rugby strongholds of the ACT. From his wisdom and foresight came a boon to Easts, as warriors of renown were sent to join their cause. Among them were Stephen Moore, Michael Hooper, and Ben Hand, whose deeds were already known across the land. In time, others of great renown—David Pocock, Clyde Rathbone, and Jordan Smiler—came to Easts, lending their strength to the enduring cause.

Thus was kindled a new fire in the heart of Easts, and with the coming of a new steward, Arch Vanderglas, the house of Easts found fresh resolve. The years turned, and in 2013, amid the great centenary of Canberra, the club marked its own 75th year, a testament to its enduring spirit and legacy.

The Third Age and the Road Ahead

Now, in this age, the warriors of Easts still take the field, unshaken by time, undaunted by hardship. They stand, as they always have, bound by kinship and tradition, their banners flying high. The road ahead is long, and battles yet untold await, but Easts shall endure, as they have for many an age.

For though seasons may turn and years may pass, the fire within the hearts of those who bear the red, white and blue shall never be extinguished.
